5. The cash value of your policy generally becomes a valuable source of funds only after several years of premium payments, allowing it to accumulate. Each approach to accessing your policy's cash value has its own benefits and drawbacks, as well as varying tax implications. Surrendering, withdrawing from, or taking loans against a policy will decrease both the cash surrender value and the death benefit, and may also impact any dividends received. Typically, surrenders and withdrawals are taxable if they exceed the policy's cost basis, whereas loans are not taxed at the time they are taken. However, if not managed correctly, loans against a life insurance policy can lead to negative consequences. Any policy loans and automatic premium loans, along with any accrued interest, must be repaid either in cash or from the policy's values upon termination or the death of the insured.
